ShadowCaster Flats Fishing

inshoretarponbonefishpermitredfish

Operating from 700 Front Street in Key West, ShadowCaster Flats Fishing has earned a perfect 5.0-star rating from 120 Google reviews. Captain Travis runs trips from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily, offering both flats fishing and reef/bottom action depending on what clients want to target.

According to their website at keysflatsfishing.com and customer reviews, Captain Travis is the primary guide, and he's mentioned by name in nearly every review. John handles communications and booking, with multiple reviewers praising his thorough communication.

You can reach them at (305) 587-7669. The perfect rating across 120 reviews is rare and suggests consistently strong experiences across different trip types and client expectations.

Consistent action and smart spot selection

Scott Erbs and his 10-year-old son had lines in the water producing fish constantly: "Anytime a line was in the water we were reeling in something." Captain Travis knows his spots and, as multiple reviews note, won't waste time at dead holes.

Excellent catch-and-release ethics

Kevin Ayres specifically mentioned how Travis "cared for the fish" during catch-and-release trips. For anglers who fish for sport rather than the cooler, that attention to fish handling matters.

Impressive range of species

Scott's trip landed groupers, varieties of snapper, jacks, blue runners, and finished with a 7-foot, 200+ pound nurse shark. That diversity suggests Travis knows where different species hold and can target them based on what clients want.

Off-season tarpon success

Kelli Wrazien's group hooked a tarpon "2 minutes off the dock" in early September, which is technically outside peak tarpon season. They backed it up with two more before sunrise. That's expert guiding, not just running the standard program.

Professional cleaning service

Scott noted Travis cleaned their keepers "to perfection." When you're dealing with multiple species and varying fillet techniques, that skill level matters for maximizing your take-home quality.

With 120 reviews and a perfect 5.0-star rating on Google, the feedback is remarkably positive:

Captain Travis's knowledge and work ethic dominate the reviews. He's described as someone who knows the area, cares about the resource, and adjusts tactics to keep clients on fish.

John's communication excellence. Multiple reviewers specifically praise John for "thorough communication" during the booking process, which helps first-timers understand what to expect.

Versatility across trip types. Reviews mention everything from mangrove fishing to tarpon to reef species, suggesting they can handle various goals rather than specializing narrowly.

Respect for the resource. The emphasis on proper catch-and-release technique and care for fish suggests they're thinking about long-term sustainability, not just maximizing today's numbers.

The operation appears to focus on quality over volume when it comes to clients. With one captain (Travis) handling trips, availability may be more limited than larger fleet operations.

Anglers who fish for the experience, not just meat - Travis's catch-and-release ethics and fish care make this a great choice if you're more interested in the fight than filling the cooler.

Families introducing kids to fishing - Scott's 10-year-old had a "fantastic day," and the variety of species kept things interesting. Travis knows how to keep young anglers engaged.

Off-season visitors hoping for tarpon - The September tarpon success suggests Travis knows where fish hold even outside prime seasons. If you're visiting during shoulder periods, that knowledge helps.

Anglers wanting diverse species in one trip - From mangrove snapper to grouper to sharks, the reviews show Travis can target variety rather than just focusing on one fish type.

Return visitors building relationships - With one primary captain, you're fishing with the same guide each time, which lets him learn your preferences and you can build on previous trips.

Book through John and ask about current conditions for your target species. His thorough communication style means you'll get honest information about what's realistic for your timing.

If you're interested in tarpon during non-peak seasons, mention that when booking. Travis's September success shows he knows where to find them, but you'll need to communicate that goal.

Bring appropriate camera equipment if you're catch-and-release fishing. Good photos let you document impressive catches without needing to keep every fish. Travis handles fish carefully, which gives you time for quality pictures.

The mangrove areas Travis fishes are "just beautiful," according to Kevin's review. If you appreciate scenery along with fishing, mention that interest. The backcountry environment is special beyond just the fish.

Ask Travis about nurse sharks if you want to experience one. Scott's 7-footer was clearly a trip highlight. These fish aren't dangerous but provide impressive battles and make great photos.

Take advantage of early morning departures, especially if you're targeting tarpon. Kelli's group hooked three before sunrise, which is classic tarpon timing. You'll need to be okay with very early starts, but the bite makes it worthwhile.

If you're keeping fish, ask about the best preparation methods for different species. Guides who clean fish to perfection often have strong opinions about cooking techniques.

My 10 year old son and I just had a fantastic day out on the water with Captain Travis. Anytime a line was in the water we were reeling in something. Groupers, varieties of snapper, Jacks, blue runners, and to finish the day we brought up a 7 ft+ 200 lb+ nurse shark. Lots of keeper snapper and grouper which he cleaned to perfection. We did a lot of research of what guide service to use and feel like we’ve found a life long bond with these guys. Thanks again Capt Travis, and tight lines.

Travis was my fishing guide for 2 mornings in a row. He knows the area and he knows how to catch the many species of fish here. I had a wonderful time and was very pleased to see how he cared for the fish as I wanted to catch and release. The mangrove areas are just beautiful. I will definitely call Shadow Casters again when I come back.

Travis was amazing! John communicated thoroughly. We went at the beginning of September (which technically is not Tarpon season) and hooked a Tarpon 2 minutes off the dock!! We backed it up with 2 more before the sun broke. Fantastic charter. Would recommend to anyone. We found our new charter!! Great day on the water!!
