Overview

Dream Catcher Charters is one of Key West's most established fishing operations, founded by Captain Steven Lamp in 1994. What sets this outfit apart is the fleet diversity and captain quality. We're talking five different vessel types ranging from 24-foot bay boats for flats work up to a 47-foot Viking for offshore, each matched to specific fishing styles. Captain Lamp sits on the Florida Guides Association board and runs a mentorship program for new guides, which speaks to his standing in the industry (source: dreamcatchercharters.com).

The operation runs 300+ charters annually with hand-picked captains, and they've held TripAdvisor's Travelers' Choice Award every year since 2010 (source: dreamcatchercharters.com).

Fleet & Equipment

Here's what I've found works about their fleet approach: they match the boat to what you're actually doing. The 24-foot bay boats handle backcountry and flats fishing for up to four anglers. Need to get to the Marquesas or run reef trips? They've got 28-foot and 36-foot center consoles. The 36-footer (named "Too Intense") is also their Dry Tortugas boat—Dream Catcher holds an exclusive charter permit for fishing Fort Jefferson, which is pretty rare (source: dreamcatchercharters.com).

For offshore work, the 47-foot Viking "INXS" runs deep sea trips for up to six people with no fuel surcharges, which is worth noting since fuel can add hundreds to your bill elsewhere.

Something to keep in mind: they partner with high-end manufacturers (DAIWA, Mercury Marine, GARMIN, Power Pole, AFTCO) and replace or update equipment yearly, according to their website. Multiple customer reviews mention "clean and very well equipped boat" and "best boats, equipment and staff" (source: TripAdvisor reviews).

Fishing Options

Dream Catcher covers the full spectrum of Key West fishing:

Flats & Backcountry: Tarpon, permit, bonefish, sharks, barracuda. The 24-foot bay boats are purpose-built for poling the flats and working backcountry channels.

Reef & Wreck: Yellowtail snapper, grouper, other food fish species. Captain Lamp's fishing reports from October 2025 noted that "yellowtail snapper fishing heated up considerably as water quality improved at the reef" (source: fishingkeywest.com).

Offshore: Wahoo, mahi dolphin, and various pelagics. The December 2025 fishing report highlighted full moon wahoo action, and the March 2025 report documented strong bonefish numbers on the flats in mid-70s water temps (source: fishingkeywest.com).

Specialty Trips: They also run sandbar trips, lobstering, snorkeling, and even bird watching tours on the 27-foot pontoon "Toon Time Boat."

What Customers Say

With a 5.0 Google rating and extensive TripAdvisor reviews, the positive feedback is consistent. Here's what stands out:

Captain Quality (Most Mentioned): Multiple customers called out specific captains by name—Herbie H., Karl, Richard Rice, Paulette, Dave, Tommy. One customer wrote: "Captain Richard Rice w/ Dream Catcher Charters is one of the best captains with whom we have every fished. He is experienced, patient, thorough, professional, nice, and fun!!" Another noted that "Karl was very friendly, knowledgeable, safe, and really made sure my son got the first and best opportunities" (source: TripAdvisor reviews).

Consistent Success: One repeat customer wrote "We always have good captains, catch fish every time," and another on The Hull Truth forum said "Amazing Yellowfin fleet, great captain, lots of fish. One of our best charters ever" (source: thehulltruth.com).

Family-Friendly: Several reviews mention positive experiences with kids and beginners, with captains praised for teaching ability and patience.

The Negatives (Because Transparency Matters):

The few critical reviews we found centered on specific issues:

One customer had a poor lobster snorkeling trip, stating: "Half-day lobster snorkeling trip was not worth the $500 paid. In 4 hours we only saw ONE lobster and it was too small to catch." They also mentioned poor follow-up from staff when expressing dissatisfaction (source: Yelp reviews).

Another customer had a fishing trip that didn't meet expectations: "Terrible trip. Caught 8 fish between 4 of us for a 4-hour trip costing $650. Total weight maybe reached 4lbs. The bait provided were 6 small shrimp" (source: Yelp reviews).

These represent a very small percentage of overall reviews, but they're worth noting. The lobstering complaints suggest that trip type may be hit-or-miss depending on conditions and season.

Who This Works For

If you're looking for a well-established operation with a diverse fleet and consistent captain quality, Dream Catcher checks those boxes. The 30+ years in business and industry involvement (FGA board membership, captain mentorship program) indicate this isn't a fly-by-night outfit.

The fleet variety means you can match your trip to the right boat—serious flats anglers get proper bay boats, offshore guys get the Viking, families wanting a sandbar day get the pontoon. That flexibility matters.

What I've found in the reviews is strong repeat customer loyalty—lots of people saying "when in Key West, I always fish with Dream Catcher." That's usually a good sign.

The thing about lobster snorkeling trips: based on the negative reviews, I'd probably pass on those unless conditions are ideal and you're setting proper expectations. Stick with what they're known for—putting you on fish with experienced captains.

Bottom Line

Dream Catcher Charters offers one of the more comprehensive fishing operations in Key West, backed by three decades of experience and consistent positive reviews. The captain quality gets mentioned more than anything else, which is what really matters when you're on the water. The diverse fleet means they can handle everything from stalking bonefish on the flats to running 70 miles to the Dry Tortugas.

Pricing is mid-to-upper range for Key West, but you're getting newer equipment, professional captains, and a well-organized operation. The overwhelming majority of customers report excellent experiences and many become repeat clients year after year.

Best For: Anglers wanting a professional operation with proven captain quality and fleet options for multiple fishing styles

Maybe Skip: Lobster snorkeling trips appear inconsistent based on reviews

We had an amazing 4-hour fishing charter trip with Captain Herbie! Herbie is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic! He knew exactly where to take us, and we were on the fish right away. We caught barracuda, several kinds of snapper, and porgy. We even hooked into a tarpon and a shark, which was an unforgettable experience—even though they got away! Captain Herbie made the whole day fun and exciting, and we couldn’t have asked for a better trip. We kept enough snapper to have a delectable lunch that he fileted for us! Herbie gave us a recommendation of a local place (Hurricane Hole) to have our fish cooked for us. Couldn't be any more fresh! Highly recommend!

My son and I recently had the fishing trip of a lifetime thanks to Capt. Herbie. We have been on countless charters and I can’t think of one where we had better captain than Herbie. He is a master of his craft, a great brand ambassador for Dream Catcher Charters, professional, enthusiastic, and work hard to put his customers on the fish. We definitely recommend to anyone traveling to Key West looking for a fishing trip.
