Overview

Captain Conch Charters is one of Key West's most established fishing operations, running boats out of Historic Charter Boat Row since 1994. Here's the deal with this outfit: they run a multi-boat fleet with several different captains, which means experiences can vary quite a bit depending on which boat and crew you get.

They offer three main trip types - split charters (sharing the boat with up to 5 other anglers), private charters (your group only), and party boat trips (up to 10 people). If you're looking to get on the water without paying for a full private charter, their split options start at $200 for a half-day (4 hours) and $250 for a 3/4-day (6 hours), according to their website.

The operation targets everything from inshore species to offshore gamefish - snapper, grouper, tuna, mahi, tarpon, and even sailfish. They claim a 99% success rate on catching multiple species, though customer experiences tell a more nuanced story.

What Customers Are Saying

With 60+ reviews on Yelp alone and listings across TripAdvisor, FishingBooker, and other platforms, there's plenty of feedback to look at. The picture that emerges is mixed - some genuinely great trips, and some disappointing ones.

The Good Stuff

Many customers have had excellent experiences, particularly praising specific captains and crew. One reviewer noted that "Captain Michael, Luis and Kelly provided a truly memorable family and friends fishing experience, with the team being extremely knowledgeable, professional and friendly." Another reported "Captain Cook got customers on fish right away and knew exactly where to be and when."

Fishing success varies but there are solid catch reports. Recent trips have landed sailfish, a 32-pound blackfin tuna, plenty of mackerel and barracuda, along with mahi mahi, yellowtail, and various snappers and grouper. One group reported "Two boats, nearly 30 fish" on their outing.

The operation seems to work well with families and kids. Multiple reviews mention Captain Tishima making sure young anglers caught fish and had fun, with one parent noting "Captain Tishima made sure a 12-year-old son caught plenty of fish and had fun, with both Tishima and first mate Bitty being very helpful."

The Not-So-Good

Here's where you need to pay attention: there are also some serious negative reviews that cite professionalism issues. At least one customer was "extremely disappointed with the entire trip and with the response from the company" after being cursed at by crew. Another review was titled "Rude Crew, Old, Uncomfortable & Loud Stink Pot of a Slug Boat!"

Some customers reported full-day trips with no fish caught, with one calling it "a waste of time, money, and energy" and saying "Not worth the bait on the hook." There's also at least one review titled "Where's my Tip?" suggesting potential pressure around gratuities.

The split charter format itself seems to be a source of some complaints, with customers reporting "wasted time catching bait and unfair distribution of fishing opportunities." If you book a shared charter, understand that fishing time gets divided among multiple anglers.

What This Means for You

The multi-captain operation probably explains the variation. You might get Captain Gary or Captain Tishima and have a great time, or you might get a different crew and have a less positive experience. One reviewer acknowledged this weather-dependent reality: "I refuse to be one of those people who give a bad review just because we had a rather bad day on the water."

If you're considering Captain Conch, it might be worth asking when you book which captain and boat you'll be fishing with, and checking recent reviews for that specific crew.

What's Included

Captain Conch provides all the standard inclusions you'd expect:

  • All fishing tackle and equipment
  • Bait
  • Fishing licenses
  • Bottled water
  • On-site fish filleting services

They operate from 6:30 AM to 9:00 PM, giving you flexibility for morning or afternoon trips.

Species You Can Target

The waters around Key West are incredibly diverse, and Captain Conch targets the full range:

Inshore/Nearshore: Tarpon, snapper (yellowtail, stone snapper, grass snapper), grouper, barracuda, mackerel, grunt, parrot fish

Offshore: Tuna (blackfin and yellowfin), mahi mahi, sailfish, sharks (blacktip and others)

The bite varies throughout the year, but with this variety of species, there's usually something to put a bend in your rod.

The Bottom Line

Captain Conch Charters has been around for over three decades, which doesn't happen without doing something right. The location on Historic Charter Boat Row is prime, they run multiple boats so they can usually accommodate you, and they offer affordable split charter options that get you offshore without breaking the bank.

That said, the reviews tell you this isn't a consistently five-star operation. Some crews are excellent, some apparently not so much. If you're particular about professionalism and want a guaranteed quality experience, you might want to look elsewhere or specifically request one of the captains who get consistently good reviews. If you're flexible and understand that fishing - especially shared charters - can be hit or miss, the pricing makes it worth considering.

Something to keep in mind: when you're paying $200-250 for a shared charter versus $600-800+ for a private trip, you're making a trade-off. You get less personalized attention, less control over where you fish and for how long, and your experience depends more on the other anglers on the boat.

For families looking to introduce kids to offshore fishing without a huge investment, this could be a solid option based on the positive family reviews. Just set expectations accordingly.

Captain Craig and Roscoe were fantastic yesterday. From start to finish we felt safe and well cared for during our first ever fishing trip. We booked a private charter and got the entire experience for our family of 4. They explained the boat, the gear and what to expect on our trip. We caught mackerel and then had an experience of a lifetime catching a 6ft coral reef shark. You can’t go wrong with this charter company and Capt. Craig and Roscoe.

This was an amazing experience. Captain Craig and 1st Mate Roscoe were fantastic. Our family (my husband and I w/ 3 kids) went for 4 hours. We all caught multiple fish. I was so proud that each of my small kids were able to reel in a Barracuda on their own, with a little physical assistance. Roscoe knew it was important to me for my kids to catch something great and he made that happen for us. He was full of energy, knowledgeable and enthusiastic throughout the whole trip! I hope the memory of this this trip stays with my family forever. Thanks Captain Conch Charters...and Thank You "Conchenstein" for the safe and beautiful ride! 💯% Recommend Captain Conch Charters, CONCHENSTEIN and Captain Craig with 1st Mate Roscoe!

What an EPIC day on the water with Gary and Mason! Mason was incredible—he literally never stopped moving. My daughter caught her first Mackerel and it was a great size, and I landed two HUGE Barracuda! Fish after fish, nonstop action, and pure adrenaline the entire trip. The energy on the boat was unreal. Mason knew exactly where to go, how to hook up fast, and kept everyone fired up the whole time. On top of that, he shared tons of knowledge about the local waters and Key West history—next level experience. If you want real action, big catches, and an unforgettable fishing trip in Key West, this is it. We’ll 100% be back for another round. Highly, highly recommend! 🎣🔥
